More heads have been rolling in President Jammeh's post-electoral purge of government administration and public enterprises. In the most recent shake-up, Mr. Omar Ndow, the Managing Director of the Gambia Telecommunications Company (Gamtel), is reported to have been dismissed from his position on Monday 20th November 2006. His dismissal follows that of Mr. Alhagie Cham, who was last week removed from the Chief Executive Office of Gamtel's sister company, Gamcel. The dismissals are seen by many observers as part of the purges of the civil service that follows all presidential elections since Jammeh took over power in 1994. Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Mr. Ndow has been replaced by Mr. Katim Touray who comes in from the recently established Public Utility Regulatory Authority (PURA). Mr. Touray had earlier worked at Gamtel as a middle-level staff member. Mr. Touray, who is 36, began his working life at Gamtel in 1991 before moving to PURA as Communications Officer for Telecommunications in 2005.
Meanwhile in other changes in the civil service, according to official sources, yet another mini reshuffle has taken place in the Gambian civil service, Mr. Willy Goof, Permanent Secretary Department of State for Foreign Affairs, is relieved of his post and replaced with Mariam Ndure-Njie, his former Deputy Permanent Secretary.
In yet another development, Lamin Nyabally, who served as Permanent Secretary for few days at the Office of the President, has now been transferred to the Department of State for Works and Infrastructure, replacing Mr. Lamin Sanneh. The later is said to have been transferred to the Mile Two Central Prisons after days at the NIA headquarters.
Karamo Jaiteh, Managing Director of Road Authority, has also been removed and replaced by Mr. Badou Mboge in an acting capacity. Mr. Mboge was the Chairman of the Road Authority. Mr. Tamsir Manga, Permanent Secretary at the Department of State for Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs, has also been fired, replaced by Mr. Ebou Joof, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the same Department of State.
