Gambia News : Gambia welcomes new season's first tourist arrivals

gambia Over 200 tourists on board Thomas Cook Northern Europe flight have arrived in Banjul on holidays, signalling the start of the new tourist season, tourism officials confirmed to PANA on Monday. The first tourist arrivals in the year, going by the tiny West African country's tourism calendar, were said to have been welcomed at Banjul International Airport by Gambia's tourism minister and other senior officials within the sector.

"Statistics for this year's tourist season are very impressive and the season is going to be a colourful one," Alieu Mboge, Director-General of Gambia Tourism Authority, remarked.

Tourism plays a key role in Gambian economy as a leading foreign exchange earner as well as source of direct and indirect employment for many people in the country, majority of whose people live below the poverty line.
