Gambia: Unknown Men Steal Electric Cables

Jan 11,2007 by

gambia Eight compounds in New Jeshwang have been experiencing serious blackout after unknown men recently, in the early hours of the morning, climbed and removed the cables of six electric poles making away with the cables.

The incident took place outside the compounds adjacent to the premises of the Secretary of State for Tourism and Culture.

Speaking to this reporter, a tenant at Touray Kunda said: “The poles are smooth, if anybody should climb them, they must have a big reason for doing so, and must have knowledge about electricity, the poles and the wires too. How did the people involved know there was no current at the time? How were they sure there would be no current while they were on their operation? We are disappointed.”

According to other tenants at Mendy Kunda, NAWEC was contacted and they have replaced the cables but about eight compounds belonging to Messrs Touray, Sawaneh, Mendy, Jobe, Sillah, Colley, Mendy and Jarju were experiencing low voltage.

One Cornelia Mendy said she was of the opinion that the wrong cables were installed because they were unable to read their books. “Even candle is brighter than our electricity now,” she added.

Another young man in the affected area said: “The thieves must have been ex-NAWEC employees or NAWEC employees because they know about climbing and changing wires than any layman does.”
