Gambia News : A shake up in the Gambia national army - Lang Tombong Tamba removed
Gambian president Yahya Jammeh on Friday effected some changes in
the hierarchy of the Gambia National Army by removing the Chief of
Defense Staff Lieutenant General Lang Tombong Tamba, replacing him with
Major General Massaneh Kinteh.
While
according to a press release read over the Gambia Radio and Televsion
Services on Friday night, no reasons were given for the removal of
General Tamba, but several other senior army officers were also removed
with him.
Since coming to power in a military coup in 1994,
President Jammeh himself has survived several perceived coup attempts,
the last major one being in 2006 which led to the arrest and detention
of several senior army officers and civilians.
There was however no indication that this latest shake up has got anything to do with yet another perceived coup attempt.
