APRC Supporter’s Trial at Standstill

Dec 23,2006 by

By A. Nyockeh-
The trial of Mr Almamo Gibba, an APRC supporter, could not proceed last Thursday owing to the absence of the chief prosecutor of Western Region, ASP Badjie. The hearing is said to have coincided with ASP Badjie’s engagement in a rehearsal in preparation for the swearing-in ceremony of the president recently held at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

The case was accordingly adjourned to December 18th.

Readers would recall that Mr. Gibba is currently facing charges of assault causing actual bodily harm inflicted on one Oully Touray who happens to be a supporter of the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP). The case is being heard at the Brikama Magistrates’ Court.

In a related development, senior magistrate Edrissa Mbai has told a court hearing involving a Bissau national that in any decent society, there must be an observance of the rule of law.

Odu Jarjue a Guinea Bissau national, is accused of threatening violence against two immigration officers with the use of a cutlass.

He was since sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour without an option of a fine.

Magistrate Mbai has also ordered for his immediate deportation to his native land after serving his jail sentence.
