Abdoulie Sonko Treason Trial Proceeds at High Court

The treason trial against Abodlie Sonko, who has been accused of complicity in the Farafenni barracks attack in November 1996, resumed last Thursday before Justice Monageng of the Banjul High Court.

In his submission the state counsel, Merly Wood, who is prosecuting the case, told the court that she was unable to get the pictures required in court as evidence and applied for the case to proceed. Her application was granted.

Continuing his testimony, Lt. Col. Biran Saine, one of the hostages from the attack, said he recognised the “bearded man” in the picture as Abdoulie Sonko. His evidence was however rejected by the defense counsel, Lawyer Mai Fatty.

In his objection, Counsel Fatty stated that the prosecution could not make reference to a picture that is not before the court. He argued that the witness’s evidence amounted to hearsay, urging the court to reject it.

The case was adjourned to enable the state prosecution to respond to the defence counsel’s objection
