Gambia News : Alleged Marabouts on Swindling Spree
People have been going around for some time now pretending to be marabouts, using magical tricks to swindle large sums of money from unsuspecting individuals.
A lady walked into the offices of The Daily News and narrated an ordeal she suffered at the hands of these fake marabouts. In her narration Fatou Badjie said through this swindle game, she lost twenty six thousand dalasis (D26, 000) as a result of this.
She said she was on Monday going to visit a sister whose husband was involved in a car accident and was confronted by a man who started asking her strange questions. “I am in a hurry, can you please let me go”, Mrs. Badjie, in her mid 50s explained to The Daily News.
At this juncture, she added that the pseudo marabout started telling her that he knew where she is going and subsequently started telling her about her sister’s husband car accident. “Before I could say any thing, he asked me to open my palm and suddenly, I saw an egg in my palm. The marabout threw the egg on the ground, and in it there was a ring”, she narrated.
Madam Fatou Badjie narrated this encounter while tears of shock rolled down her cheeks. She told this paper that the so-called marabout claimed that the ring when used, will bring about good luck and endless fortune for the rest of her life. She said after using the ring on her finger, she withdrew an amount of twenty-six thousand dalasis (D26, 000) from her Trust Bank account.
According to Momodou Darboe who came along with Mrs. Badgie explained similar ordeal at the hands of the alleged marabouts. Darboe said he was swindled out of a sum of thirteen thousand dalasis (D13, 000) to pseudo marabout without his knowledge.
Similar trick was used on another unsuspecting guy (name withheld). Thanks to his alertness and vigilance, he would not give in to demands from the so-called marabouts. According to him, he was also confronted with numerous of such incidents when some people particularly young men, disguised themselves as marabouts in a bid to swindle his hard-earned money in exchange for help to overcome challenges at his work place.
Both victims spoke of the need for authorities to investigate and bring the culprits to book and to discontinue the spate of swindling taing palce in our society.
