Gambia: Baba Jobe Emerges As GT Bank Case Resumes

A lawsuit filed by Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) against Baba K. Jobe, former NAM for Jarra West, had been deferred to a later date.

The case, which was scheduled for hearing yesterday, 15th May 2007, before Justice Haddy C. Roche of the Banjul High Court, could not proceed as the defendant, Baba Jobe, was not brought to court.

Baba K. Jobe, who is currently serving a nine-year prison term following his conviction for economic crimes, has been involved in a legal battle with Guaranty Trust Bank.

The bank is claiming from Baba Jobe D7m (Seven million dalasis) being money he for which he allegedly stood as a guarantor.

This paper later learned that prison authorities advanced as their reason for not bringing the defendant to the court the fact that they had not been served with the notice of the hearing. In addition it was also learned that the defendant was taken to the Banjul police station.

When news of Baba Jobe’s expected appearance in court spread, his relatives and friends poured into the High Court premises.
