Gambia News : Convicted Gambian journalist files appeal

gambia Lamin Fatty, the convicted Gambian journalist working for the banned Banjul-based Independent Newspaper, has filed and appeal against his conviction. The appeal comes up for hearing 11 November, Fatty confirmed to PANA Saturday.

According to the journalist who now lives in exile, his lawyer filed the appeal at the Banjul High Court, where Justice Wowo presides.

Fatty is seeking to overturn a ruling made by Kanifing Court, presided over by the sacked magistrate, Buba Jawo.

The journalist was 5 June last year, convicted and fined 50, 000 Gambian dalasis (about US$ 1,850) and in default to serve one year imprisonment.

He was tried for false publication - a charge he denied until he was pronounced guilty by the court.

The fine was paid by the Gambia Press Union, the umbrella body of independent journalists in the West African country.
