Gambia News : Gambia: Court to drop charges against judges
The Gambia Government will consider dropping criminal charges against some of its judicial staff undergoing trial, if they are exempted by an audit report currently under review at the Attorney General's chambers in Banjul.
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Richard Chenge told a magistrates' court in Banjul the trial that brought the number of suspects to six after adding Momodou Sonko, Pa Modou Njie and Alagie ML Sonko to the list of suspects is considering dropping charges against some senior judicial employees implicated in the corruption scandal that surfaced in October last year.
Chenge said they have received the auditor's report about the case, but added that they were reviewing the report, which the Justice Department source said is likely to exonerate some staffers previously implicated in the scandal.
He said the Attorney General's Chambers will soon amend the charge sheet in order to decide "whom to charge, who not charge and whom to be used as state witnesses against others". He then asked for an adjournment to enable the state to come up with their decision by next Friday, 22 January.
Chenge also asked the court to adjourn all the cases related to the scandal to the same day.
Defense counsel Antouman Gaye did not object to the DPP's request for an adjournment, and prayed that his client be among those to be exonerated.
The accused persons: Justice Amnah Saho-Ceesay, Justice Nguie Mboob-Janneh, Judicial Secrectary Haruna Jaiteh, Bailif Mr Sonko and Assistant Bailif Pa Modou Njie were all in court. The suspects are alleged to have stolen US$ 310, 679, 6117 from the judiciary coffers from 2005 to 2009.
