Gambia News : Critics challenge Jammeh's HIV/AIDS treatment claims
The Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh, has sparked a new wave of criticisms by celebrating his controversial Presidential treatment programme in a grand style at his native village of Kanilai, about 100 kilometres South/East of Banjul, the Gambian capital, PANA reported Monday.
According to sources, ministers, civil servants, traditional rulers, musicians and cultural troupes all flocked to village to honour Jammeh, who threw a big party in celebration of his controversial "discovery" for "cure" for 99 diseases, including HIV/AIDS, asthma and others.
As the Gambian leader and his supporters celebrated "the breakthrough", critics continued to challenge the effectiveness of the treatment, with some calling for "scientific proofs".
A respected Gambian newspaper, Foroyaa, has urged Jammeh's supporters to "stop politicizing the treatment programme.
"Illness is an enemy to humanity and needs to be uprooted," the paper warned, adding, "What is needed is the scientific validation of the President's treatment a fter three years of operation.
"This cannot be done by musicians and politicians. These should be done by laboratory scientists and pathologists. Medicine is medicine, regardless of whether it is referred to as traditional, western or modern."
The Gambian leader announced in early 2007 that he had discovered the cure for the diseases and later set up a clinic in his village where he treats patients suffering from various ailments, using traditional medicines and herbal concoctions.

- It is scientifically impossible to prove something does not exist. But as long as there is no scientific proof anybody has been cured by Dr. Blubber, no-one has been cured by Dr. Blubber. Show me the evidence and I'll be a believer!

- Many years ago, men use to travel town to town in the U.S.A, selling fake medicine. This is wrong. It still happens today, when products such as aloe vera promise to cure many diseases, AIDS included. This raises false hope amongst sufferers.
