Gambia News : ECOWAS chief discusses single currency issue with Gambian leader

gambia The Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh on Monday received in audience at State House in Banjul, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas to discuss issues pertaining to the proposed single currency for the West Africa Monetary Zone (WAMZ).

In an interview with reporters after the audience, Chambas disclosed that his mission to The Gambia was to consult with President Jammeh, the current Chairman of WAMZ to convene a summit of heads of state to set a new timetable for the convergence of the single currency for the zone.

He explained that due to the unforeseen global crisis, Africa especially has been hard hit impacting seriously on member countries meeting the 2009 convergence deadline.

But Chambas also added that The Gambia was the only country in the zone that had met all four primary convergence criteria.

He commended the government of The Gambia for its continued commitment.
