Gambia News : ECOWAS official challenges Gambian civil society actors on small arms convention
The officer in charge of clusters at the ECOWAS Small Arms Programme (ECOSAP) Secretariat in Bamako, Mali, Isaac Armstrong, on Monday challenged civil society actors from the Gambia Action Network on Small Arms (GANSA) to work with the government with a view to ensuring that the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons is ratified by The Gambia.
Armstrong made the appeal at a civil society meeting on Small and Light Weapons organized by GANSA in Fajara, about 12km from Banjul, the Gambian capital.
He indicated that some of the countries in the sub-region including The Gambia were yet to ratify the ECOWAS Convention on Small and Light Weapons. He told the participants that the Gambian Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Marie Saine Firdaus, had informed him that the draft bill on the ECOWAS Small Arms and Light Weapons was yet to reach the Gambian legislature for ratification by members.
He also called on the civil society actors to draw a project proposal on "arms reduction in exchange for skills" and send to his institution for funding. He reiterated his institution’s resolve to help civil society actors to notch up their objectives.
