Gambia News : Final report on Death of Ghanaians in Gambia out

May 14,2009 by

gambia The Ghananian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni returned home yesterday from Abuja, Nigeria, at the government delegation that attended the special hearing of the joint UN-ECOWAS fact-finding team on the death and disappearance of 44 Ghanaians and other West African nationals in the Gambia.

The other member of the delegation is the Minister for the Interior, Cletus Avoka, officials and team of legal personnel from the two Ministries.

Presenting a seven-page statement on the final report of the fact-finding team on the circumstances surrounding the death and disappearance of Ghanaian nationals in the Gambia in 2005, Alhaji Mumuni said Ghana’s delegation though with some reservations, accepted the entirety of the report on the grounds that findings, conclusions and the recommendations were consistent with the principles of justice, human rights and international law.

The statement said the eight-month investigations established that the West Africans including the 44 Ghanaians were victims of a scam perpetuated by one Captain Taylor and Lamine Tumkara a Gambian to transport them to Europe by sea.

The findings also established that members of the Gambian security service acting on their own took active part in the death and disappearance of the West African nationals including the Ghanaians.

The Foreign Minister stated that even though the report blamed rogue elements within the Gambian security for the morbid act, it did not find the state of Gambia or its leadership to the Ghanaians.

  • About the death and disappearance of 44 Ghanaians and other African nationals, is an alarming situation that seems to pose a long-term impact on the reputation of our beloved country. Let the justice be done to avoid any future conflict it may cause.
