Gambia News : Magistrate grants bail to judges, remands judicial secretary
Two High Court judges standing trial for stealing have been granted
bail by Principal Magistrate Emmanuel Nkea of the Banjul Magistrate's
Court, while a judicial secretary was denied bail in Banjul on Friday.
Justice Amina Saho Ceesay, Justice Ngui Mboob Janneh and judicial
secretary Haruna Jaiteh are standing trial for stealing as clerk or
public servant between 2005 and 2009.
All three have denied the charges.
According
to the charge sheets, Ceesay is accused of stealing D200,000 and US$
1,000 between 2005 and 2009 at the Sheriff Division of the High Court.
Janneh
is accused of stealing D803,000 at the Sheriff Division of the High
Court and Jaiteh is accused of stealing D1,07,000 at the Sheriff
Division.
Ceesay was granted bail in the sum of D4 million with
three Gambian sureties, all of whom must have a landed property within
the Greater Banjul area .
Janneh was granted bail on the grounds
of her state as an expectant mother, while Jaiteh was denied bail by
the court on the grounds that he may abscond and was send back to jail.
Police
Prosecution Officer Superintendent Yaya Touray applied for adjournment
to send the case file to the Attorney-General's Chamber for legal
advice.
