Gambia News : President Jammeh appoints New Secretaries
President Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh on Wednesday 26th March presided over the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed secretaries of state and other top government officials at State House in Banjul . Secretary of state for Foreign Affairs, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, secretary of state for Tourism and Culture, Ms. Nancy Njie and Ms. Fatim Badjie, Secretary of State for Communication Information and Technology, all took their oaths of secrecy and allegiance in a ceremony presided over by President Yahya Jammeh.
Speaking at the ceremony that was televised on state television, the erratic President Jammeh urged the newly appointed secretaries of state to ignore what he called the bad elements in society who he said would be saying , “you have joined the cabinet but you will not last long there.” He insisted that the new appointees will last long in cabinet if they execute their duties. He urged them not to listen to such detractors and cited the example of Vice President Isatou Njie Saidy who, he said, survived in his cabinet for over twelve years. It is not that she does not make her own set of mistakes, Mr. Jammeh said, but she does not make them deliberately, Mr. Jammeh noted. He added that he had never had any reason even once to question Mrs. Njie Saidy’s “integrity, patriotism and dedication to work.”
Insinuating reasons for the removal of three secretaries of state last week, Mr. Jammeh went into to the topic of his favorite toy, vehicles. The Gambian leader is known to have a child-like fun for fashionable and expensive cars and has them by the hundreds. He urged the secretaries of state to make best use of their vehicles and take care of government vehicles as well. President Jammeh opined that they are in “very bad conditions” noting that there is no control at any level in the various departments. “Government vehicles should be labeled and wherever they are, they should be recognized. They should also carry GG numbers rather than allowing the unscrupulous individuals to put on private number plates which they use to easily steal the vehicles. If you don’t control the vehicles, the fuel consumption will be high and the sustenance will be difficult” he stressed.
The ceremony also saw the swearing in of the new Secretary General Mrs. Tenengba Jaiteh and Mr. Abdoulie Sallah, one of the recently dropped secretaries of state who is now made Secretary to Cabinet. It was attended by Vice President Isatou Njie Saidy who also set the usual chorus of President Jammeh’s statements.

- Gambians are becoming bored with this cabinet shuffles, hiring & firing routine. Simply switching ministers around in different cabinet positions that they have no experience in will do us no good. Njie , Notting Hill, London .
