Gambia News : Liberian Speaker Visits The Gambia

Honourable J. Alex Teyler Snr, The speaker of the Liberian parliament, yesterday paid a visit to The Gambia.

Speaking at the National Assembly complex in Banjul, Hon. Alex Teyler Snr. indicated that he is on a tour of West African states, designed to learn from them.

“I am here in The Gambia to learn from your parliamentary procedures and experiences, and also to say thank you for what you have done in ensuring that lasting peace has returned to Liberia”, he said. He added that it was The Gambia that hosted the meeting that brought about the deployment of troops to Liberia.

He noted that The Gambia and Liberia have a lot in common. He also expressed the opinion that The Gambia is unique, adding that there had been transformation in the country.

The Liberian speaker revealed that he had already visited Ivory-Coast, Mali, Mauritania and will be proceeding to Burkina Faso from here.

His Gambian counterpart, Hon. Fatoumata Jahumpa Ceesay, hailed the visit, noting that the two countries have a good relationship, adding that this visit would no doubt strengthened the existing brotherly relations. She indicated that dialogue between the two countries should be encouraged, so as to learn from each other.

She continued that the two countries could work together, most notably, by building links between the two parliaments so as to learn from each other’s procedures.

The Liberian speaker also paid a courtesy call on the Secretary of State for Fisheries, Hon. Yankuba Touray, who is also the Secretary of State responsible for National Assembly matters before returning to the National Assembly for an interactive session with the members of The Gambian parliament.
