Gambia News : Mining firm boss charged in Gambia

Feb 22,2008 by

gambia Gambian authorities have charged the director of British-based Australian miner Carnegie Minerals with economic crime and theft after accusing the company of illegally mining titanium, iron ore and uranium.

British mining engineer Charles Northfield appeared in the High Court in Banjul on three counts of economic crime and four counts of theft, witnesses said.

Northfield was arrested after authorities in the Gambia shut down the Gambia offices of Carnegie last week and revoked its mineral licence, almost a month after President Yahya Jammeh ordered the firm to clarify its activities.

In a statement posted on its website, Carnegie denied the state's accusation that it had been commercially mining titanium, iron ore and uranium under its mineral sands licence in the former British colony.

"The Company wants to make clear that a component of mineral sands (Ilmenite, for which we are licensed to mine) is Titanium and Iron oxide. We would also like to clarify that trace amounts of uranium occurring in the Gambian minerals sands are usual for such deposits and cannot be economically extracted and therefore have no commercial value," it added.

Carnegie said it was working closely with the British Foreign Office to try to secure Northfield's release.

The prosecution alleged that Carnegie, and Northfield, caused economic loss to Gambia between 2006 and 2007.

Carnegie said it had provided to the Gambian government full disclosure with each shipment of mineral sands.

Northfield's defence lawyer appealed for a review of the accused's bail conditions. No date has been set for a trial.
