Gambia News : Two Gambian opposition parties consider alliance
Hamat Bah, leader of Gambia's opposition National Reconciliation Party (NRP), has hinted at forming an alliance with the West African country's main opposition United Democracy Party (UDP), saying his doors are always open to the UDP and its leader, Ousainou Darboe.
Bah made the alliance proposal at the just-concluded UDP congress held in Jarra Soma, a town situated some 300 km from Banjul City.
He said since UDP is the biggest opposition party in the Gambia, polling over 42 per cent of the votes cast in the last presidential election against the three p er cent of smaller parties, it would only be right for the party and its leader, Ousainou Darboe, to lead any future alliance.
Bah reiterated that his party, the NRP, like the main opposition UDP, 'is committed to the restoration of democracy and rule of law in The Gambia'.
According to some political analysts, the UDP invited Bah with the aim of having him float a possible coalition idea to various opposition elements.
Gambia's opposition parties formed united front under the banner of National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD) during the last elections held in 2006 but it collapsed.
The alliance broke up due to leadership struggle among the key party leaders who were competing over the issue of NADD's presidential candidate.
