Gambia News : Gambia: Rights group stresses freedom of expression
The Honorary President of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) has again stressed the importance of freedom of expression in a democratic society and urged governments to create a comfortable working environment for journalists. Mr. Sidiki Kaba was speaking at a press conference organised by FIDH at Kairaba Beach Hotel in Banjul on Monday.
He said his organisation and other human rights groups were still shocked by the death of Deyda Hydara, a Gambian journalist who was killed in a drive by shooting on December 2004.
“The investigations that were carried out cannot just tell who the perpetrators are but our position is that we will continue to advocate for justice together with international human rights defenders,” Mr Kaba said.
He added that governments should respect their duties and obligations, and inter national conventions that they have signed, saying “for a government to be respected, one should respect your country”.
In the case of Chief Ebrima Manneh, another Gambian journalist, who is believed to have been abducted since July 2006, Mr Kaba said it was the responsibility of the government to protect its citizens.
“If he is not in their custody, they should investigate that matter and bring to book whoever abducted him.”
Mr Kaba also said that justice needed to be done in order to maintain peace and stability and for that to exist there was need for unity to stop illegal crimes in our regions.
