Gambia News : Gambia arrests former minister in wave of detentions

Mar 08,2010 by

gambia Gambia arrested a former fisheries minister who had been sacked last month, security sources told Reuters on Monday, extending a wave of mysterious and high-profile detentions in the West African state.

Former Minister of Fisheries Antouman Saho was taken from his home Friday night by police who said he was wanted for questioning by intelligence officials, family members who witnessed his detention said.

"We can still not establish his whereabouts as we have been trying to reach him on his cell phone," a family member told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Security sources asking not to be named for fear of retribution confirmed that Saho had been arrested. Government and police officials declined to comment.

Saho's arrest comes after Gambian authorities sacked and detained six top police and military officials last week, including Inspector General of Police Ensa Badjie and Commander of the Navy Sarjo Fofona.

One security source cited "security reasons" for those arrests, without elaborating.

Saho served in Jammeh's government from 1994 up to the time he was sacked last month. He is also a former mayor of the capital Banjul and had served as Gambia's ambassador to countries including China and the United Arab Emirates.

Police sources also told Reuters Monday that a Nigerian human rights worker, Edwin Nwakaeme, was arrested last week. Nwakaeme is a director at Africa in Democracy and Good Governance (ADG) based in Banjul.
