Gambia News : Gambia bans Chinese milk products

gambia The Gambia health and medical service has banned the importation of milk and milk products from China, Dr. Tamsir Mbowe, Director of Medical and Health Service, announced in Banjul on Wednesday.

He said the ban remained in force until the authorities in the West African country were sure that no melamine substance was present.

Many countries across the globe have banned milk and milk products from China following the discovery of melamine in the products.

At least five children have died in China while scores of others are ill after drinking the poisoned milk.

According to him melamine has great effects as it causes renal and reproductive illnesses.

Dr. Mbowe said public health workers would be tasked to pick samples of all milk and milk powder to be tested in laboratories outside to clarify the issue.

The authorities said they would take all possible measures to ensure that the contaminated no milk product is imported into the country.

Dr. Mbowe said the health department was yet to receive any complaint regarding the milk and urged importers to import the best milk.
