Gambia News : Gambia compensates families of Ghanaians murdered in Gambia

gambia The Government of Ghana has announced that it has received US$500,000 from The Gambia for disbursement to families whose relatives were killed in that coun try about six years ago.

This was announced in Parliament on Wednesday by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Muhammad Mumuni.

The initial number of Ghanaian victims who were murdered in the Gambia was put at 44, but subsequent investigations by a joint panel of UN and ECOWAS officials said only six of the murdered West Africans were Ghanaians.

A report by the African Union (AU) asked the Gambian government to support the families of the deceased financially so they could be given befitting traditional burial at home.

The report, however, said it did not find the Government of The Gambia directly or indirectly complicit in the murders.

Mumuni said pathologists at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra were working on the bodies for identification and subsequent burial, after which the money would then be shared among the six fami lies.

''The remains are presently in the morgue at the Police Hospital in Accra. After identification the bodies will be handed over to the families for proper burial after which the US$500,000 will be disbursed equally to the affected families,'' he said.

The victims were among dozens of immigrants who were to catch a ship to sail to Europe.
