Gambia News : Gambia digitalizes Radio, TV broadcasting
Gambian President Yahya Jammeh on Monday expressed delig ht that his
life-long personal ambition of digitalizing the Gambia Radio and
Television Services (GRTS) and satellite broadcasting have come to
fruition.
Jammeh made the statement in his key-note address at the launching
of GRTS satel lite project here, adding that his passion in the project
was not only in the immeasurable and diverse opportunities offered by
the prject but also in the opportunities it provided for Gambians in
the Diaspora and non-Gambians alike to have direct access to accurate
information on The Gambia.
“With the GRTS going satellite, news
and facts about our country, the people, our culture, and heritage
would now be accessed by all regardless of where one is located," he
said.
He said the multi-million-dollar satellite project for the
GRTS, utilizing the state of the earth equipment that is second to none
in Africa, was a solid fulfillment of his government’s aspiration to
enhance the quality of broadcasting at the GRTS.
According to
him, "by becoming more positively exposed internationally, there is no
longer any need for detractors and unscrupulous elements to spread
false and potentially-damaging stories about the Gambia.
"For being on satellite now, most of these negative stories about the Gambia would be demystified and corrected."
He
urged all Gambians, including those in the Diaspora, to join hands in
building a stronger image for their country which would earn them
respect from other people.
He also said his government would
leave no stone unturned in exploring opportunities to consolidate the
gains of the information and information technology, saying that sky
would continue to be the limit for Gambia.
He disclosed that the
next phase of the project, currently ongoing, would be the switch-over
process from the current analogue to the new and advanced digitalized
broadcasting technology and expanding this to terrestrial transmission
network.
He added that as part of efforts to spread access to
new technologies and services, government would continue to create the
environment for added TV and radio broadcasting services.
