Gambia: DoCIT On Famara Bojang's Arrest

gambia The Department of State for Communication Information and Technology (DoCIT), has clarified that the arrest of Mr Famara Bojang, a UDP nominated candidate for Bakau, had nothing to do with politics, contrary to the comments in The Points editorial and assertions by UDP Leader Ousainou Darboe, on Wednesday.

According to a press release from the DoCIT, Famara Bojang was arrested in connection with the ongoing criminal trial on charges of conspiracy to commit a felony and the possession of forged currency notes. However, the press release confirmed the release of Mr Bojang. Below is the full text of the press release.


The Department of State for Communication, Information and Technology has reacted to the Point Newspaper's editorial of Wednesday 10th January, 2007 and UDP leader, Ousanou Darboe's statement in the Point newspaper that the arrest of Famara Bojang, a UDP nominated candidate, is politically motivated. According to a Press Release from Department of State, Nfamara Bojang is involved in an ongoing trial regarding the possession of forged currency notes. Making reference to the criminal case No. Brk/cc/04/07, the release says Famara Bojang was charged on 2 counts of conspiracy to commit a felony contrary to Section 368 of the Criminal Code Cap 10 volume 111, Laws of the Gambia and possession of forged currency notes contrary to section 334 of the Criminal Code Cap 10 volume 111, Laws of the Gambia.

His arrest the release went on is not politically motivated but it is purely a criminal matter in the hands of the Police and the Courts. Meanwhile information reaching this office indicates that Famara Bojang has been released. Nothwithstanding the case continues.
