Gambia: Former Gamtel Managing Director Omar Ndow Re-arrested

Omar Ndow, former Managing Director of Gamtel, is reported to have been re-arrested by officers of the Serious Crime Unit, Police headquarters, Banjul.

Mr Ndow was yesterday brought before Justice Monageng of Banjul High Court.

Defence counsel, Lawyer Tambedou, informed the court that his client had been re-arrested by the police. He stated that when he learned of the arrest of his client, he visited  him at the police station where he was informed by the police that they would prosecute him shortly. Lawyer Tambedou told the court that he did not know the reason of his client’s arrest after having been granted bail by the court. He said he spoke to the Director of Public Prosecution who told him that he was not aware of the re-arrest but would try to find out. He said his client was re-arrested since 25th April 2007.

Omar Ndow is currently standing trial at the High Court on six counts of Economic Crime contrary to section 5 (a) of the Economic Crimes Decree 1994, Decree No 16, and punishable under section 6 of the same. The section stipulates a 10-year term of imprisonment.

After his brief appearance at the court, Mr Ndow was taken away in a police vehicle by officers from the Serious Crimes unit.
