Gambia: Libya has a lot to share with The Gambia - Dr. Hussni
Dr. Hussni Alwahishe, the Secretary of Legal Affairs and Human Rights of the General Peoples’ Congress, told the arriving Gambian delegation attending the international conference in Tripoli, Libya, that Libya has a lot to share with The Gambia. The Gambian delegation, which includes the Speaker of the National Assembly, on Monday arrived at Tripoli International Airport at about 8:30pm Libyan time.
According to The Point’s reporter in Tripoli, delegates from all over Africa converged on the North African country of Libya ahead of the international conference which starts tomorrow.
In receiving the delegation, Dr. Hussni said that the two countries have had a very close relationship, explaining that there are a lot of Libyans investing in The Gambia. He expressed their appreciation of The Gambia’s co-operation with Libya during the period it was reeling under sanctions. He said they are looking forward to seeing a united Africa devoid of restrictions and barriers that all too often undermine the movement of goods and people between African countries. “Together we are stronger,” he said.
For her part, Hon. Fatoumata Jahumpa-Ceesay, Speaker of the National Assembly, said The Gambia had always been with Libya throughout.
She said that as a demonstration of his solidarity, President Jammeh visited Libya during the sanctions regime against Tripoli. “If today anybody should be near to Libya it should be The Gambia. President Jammeh is a Muslim and a patriot,” she said.
The Speaker further said that there is nothing that could separate the two countries. “His Excellency shares the idea of pan Africanism with the Libyan leader,” she noted.
She thanked the people of the Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya for the warm welcome.
It could be recalled that President Jammeh is the first African leader to visit Libya during the era of embargo on that country.
The Gambian delegation also included other National Assembly Members, scholars, The Point’s reporter, etc..
The objective of the conference is to discuss support for member states of the African Union.
