Gambia News: First foreigners join Yahya Jammeh’s HIV “cure”

Jul 29,2007 by

gambia The Gambian health services on Friday reported the first registration of foreigners in President Yahya Jammeh’s HIV AIDS treatment programme.

According to the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS), quoting sources from the health services, an unspecified number of foreigners infected with HIV from West Africa, Malawi, Austria and Germany have registered for treatment by President Jammeh.

Even though Mr. Jammeh had once ruled out the treating of foreigners without the written consent of their governments, but it has not been made clear in the announcement whether these people have complied with this requirement. According to the GRTS, one of the patients from Malawi, Mr. Ramsi Issan, said he got to know about the treatment program from the internet and from Malawian media sources. He was quoted saying that he became more confident that the “cure” works after his arrival in Banjul.

President Jammeh announced in January that he had the capability to cure HIV AIDS, using incantations from the Holy Quran and some concoctions. So far, he claims to have cured several people of the disease.

Both the World Health Organisation and other international medical groups have criticised the treatment, which they said has not been medically certified as being a cure for the AIDS pandemic.

However, attempts by medical scientists and other concerned groups to obtain samples of his concoctions for analysis have been rejected, insisting that he would not allow anyone to question his ability to cure the disease. In February for instance, the United Nations representative in The Gambia was given 48 hours to leave the country after she questioned its efficacy.
