Gambia News : Gambian Opposition leader pays tribute to "disappeared Gambians"
Ousainou Darboe, leader of Gambia's main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), on Friday paid tribute to disappeared Gambian journalist, Chief Ebrima Manneh, and Kanyiba Kanyi, UDP's Eastern Kombo Constituency Secretary, the politician said in a statement marking Moslems' feast of Eid-El-Adha which was received here by PANA.
Darboe alleged the two men were abducted by security agents as he bemoaned the prevailing economic hardship and high cost of living that Gambians have tried to live with while celebrating the feast.
"For the past few years, the average family in Gambia has found it more and more difficult to save enough money to buy the traditional sacrificial sheep," Darboe said.
He noted: "this year is even more difficult as all indications are that many families will no doubt go without making the sacrifice. The difficulties that we all face, with the escalating prices of essential commodities and products and services in the country, have reached alarming proportions."
According to the opposition leader, the global financial crises have also made things worse by preventing many foreign-based Gambians to be sending remittances to their families.
He therefore prayed for Allah (God)'s "limitless bounty" for Gambians and all those living in the West African country.
