Gambia News : Gambian VP lays foundation stone for satellite site of regional telecoms body
The Gambian Vice President, Isatou Njie Saidy, on Monday laid the foundation stone of RASCOM’s second satellite site in the Gambia in Kololi, some 15 kilometres from Banjul.
Reading a statement on behalf of the Gambian leader, President Yahya Jammeh, tbe Vice President said that The Gambia was proud to be associated with the lofty and commendable goals of RASCOM.
According to Jammeh, the Regional African Satelitte Communication (RASCOM) a Pan-African Organisation (RASCOM) with the objective of creating a Pan-African connectivity network across the continent has over the years demonstrated its usefulness as a body that seeks to harness their opportunities "presented" by the global information and communication landscape in addressing the gaps in Africa’s telecommunication infrastructure.
Jammeh noted that the government is deeply gratified by the strides initiated by RASCOM to implement a satellite network for Africa.
"The creation of such a superstructure is an assurance to boost our drive towards attaining the middle income country status in line with the objectives of our national Vision 2020".
According to Jammeh, the launch of the RASCOM Star One (in December 2007, has been a strong wake-up call of the continent’s resolve to promote Pan-Africanism and the integration of the continent.
The satellite and associated system he went on, has added opportunities that would enable us to take full control of our affairs including the leveraging of resources and the tapping of existing, yet largely untapped potential to promote the continent’s identity as a safe-heaven for qaulity investment and business.
"It is my fervent belief that with the launch of this satellite, which is a dream come true, another milestone has been achieved to emanicipate our continent from centuries of foreign hegemony, merciless exploitation and marginalisation."
Jammeh said the government of the Gambia, in addition to increasing its shareholding in 2008, has committed to making additional investment to increase its share capital in RASCOM but said "the exact amount for this venture will be communicated soon".
He therefore urged for the greater show of commitment and solidarity necessary to leverage and mobilise additional funds in support of a different satellite technology and access to the continent.
