Gambia News : Gambian court remands rights defender over ‘false information’

Mar 09,2010 by

gambia A Gambia magistrate’s court on Monday remanded Edwin Nebolisa Nwakaeme, a local human rights defender and a Director of Programmes of the Banjul-based Africa in Democracy and Good Governance (ADG), who had been in police custody for allegedly “giving false information”.

According to a press release from the Accra-based Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) Nwakaeme declined to enter a plea when he appeared in court, and was remanded to reappear on Wednesday.

The MFWA release noted that the rights defender was first picked up on February 22 by three plain-clothes policemen in Serekunda, about 9 kilometres outside Banjul, the capital.

The activist who is a Nigerian national based in the Gambia, was later transferred to New Jeshwang Immigration Post and detained until February 25 when he was released without charge.

The MFWA said Nwakaeme was again invited on March 1 and was “unlawfully detained at the Serious Crime unit of the Gambia police headquarters in Banjul for eight days, far in excess of the 72 hours stipulated under the 1997 Constitution of The Gambia.”

President Yahya Jammeh was recently criticised by human rights groups for threatening “saboteurs” of his government with death.
