Gambia News : Gambian court sentences man to life jail for rape
A court in Banjul, the Gambia, Tuesday sentenced a man, Nfamara Saidykhan, to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of raping a teenager.
Justice Moses Richards of Special Criminal Court said the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt that the accused person had a carnal knowledge of the 14-year-old complainant against her consent, contrary to the Laws of The Gambia 1990.
He said the accused person admitted that he had sex with the complainant, and that it was beyond dispute by the accused person's own admission and the medical certificate that he had a carnal knowle dge of the complainant.
'The accused person invited the complainant to his house and he planned this act,' the presiding judge said.
In a mitigation plea on behalf of the accused, lawyer Modou Drammeh urged the court to temper justice with mercy as the accused person was a first time offender.
'The accused person is a young man and the breadwinner of his family. He has also shown remorse and is repentant,' the counsel pleaded.
In passing the sentence, the judge said he was guided by the need to act to stop the rising cases of rape in the country.

- the judge pay back the man what he deserve.no one want to see some of your family members or teenagers leev with out protection. no one should be critical to the judge as he do his job. rape is animalistic with all it's form.so is not wellcom to us.

- the sentence is harsh,the judge should some some clemency,Rape is a serious crime,but not a life sentence,Accuse person should spend 8yrs in jail.that the maximum sentence,what type of justice system we have in d Gambia,Jammeh murderer are let in the street without being put behind bars,while the repaist will have to spend life in Jail.

- Hopefully this harsh sentence will serve as a deterrent.Rape is an animalistic act and should not be tolerated in any society.There should be no justification in violating anyone's sexuality, albeit rape,molestation,or any other form of sexual act.
