Gambia News : Gambian court sentences opposition leader to one year imprisonment
The campaign manager of Gambia’s main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), Femi Peters was on Thursday sentenced to one year imprisonment and a fine of D10, 000 (US$400) by the Magistrate’s Court in Kanifing, about 12 kilometres outside the Gambian capital Banjul.
Peters was arrested and arraigned in court in October 2009 for organizing a procession and using a public address system without lawful authority at a UDP rally held in Serekunda. He was accused of organizing the rally without obtaining police authority.
This is seen here by political analysts as yet another harassment of the opposition by the Gambian authorities. They say that while the governing Alliance for Patriotic Re-orientation and Construction (APRC) had been allowed to hold rallies without police interference, the opposition had been prevented from doing so by the police consistently denying them permit to hold meetings.
The case was presided over by a Nigerian, Magistrate Kayode Olajabutu.
