Gambia News : Gambian government prepares defence before sub-regional court
The ECOWAS Community Court has set 15 December for the commencement of
hearing on the alleged torture case of a journalist, Musa Saidykhan, by
security agents of the Gambian government which is now busy preparing
to appear before the sub-regional court, the Media Foundation for West
Africa (MFWA) said Monday.
The ECOWAS Court fixed the date for the trial to proceed, having
thrown away the application made by the Gambian government which argued
that the sub-regional court lacked 'jurisdiction' to hear the matter.
According to MFWA sources, the Gambian government on 28 October asked the ECOWAS Court for more time 'to prepare its defence'.
Gambia's
National Intelligence Agency personnel allegedly tortured Musa Saidyk
han, former editor-in-chief of a banned Banjul-based Independent
newspaper in 2006 after a failed coup against President Yahya Jammeh's
government.
In November 2007, MFWA filed the suit on behalf of
Saidykhan at the ECOWAS Court 'to seek justice for him and also bring
relief to many other Gambian journalists who had suffered a similar
fate.'
