Gambia News : Gambian govt denies stationing soldiers in Senegal

Apr 18,2009 by

gambia The Gambian government Friday denied a story broadcast by Walfajr radio that the Gambian soldiers illegally entered and operated in Senegal.

In a press release monitored on Gambia Radio and Television Service, Banjul said its attention had been drawn to a recent "unfounded pronouncement" by a media organization of a neighbouring country (Walfajr) to the effect that some member of The Gambian Armed Forces illegally entered and operated in Senegalese territory.

It said the Gambian government firmly and strongly condemned and refuted, without hesitation, such an "unsubstantiated" allegation.

The statement read "In the light of such repeated, unethical and unprofessional conduct by Walfajr, the government of the Gambia wishes to express its continued commitment and willingness to uphold and strengthen the bonds of friendship existing between the brotherly peoples of the Gambia and Senegal on the basis of mutual respect of each other’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

It called on media organizations in both countries and on Walfaji in particular to promote the culture of peaceful co-existence and stability in the Senegambia region.
