Gambia News : Gambian human rights lawyer welcomes AU sanctions on Mauritania

Feb 09,2009 by

gambia The former Secretary General of The Ganbia Bar Association, on Sunday welcomed the sanctions the African Union imposed on the military junta in Mauritania.

Speaking in Banjul to an exclusive interview with APA, Borry Touray, a human rights lawyer, said the travel ban and the visa restrictions imposed by the African Union on the military government in Mauritania is a step in the right direction.

He said, ’it is a welcomed decision. "I only hope the sanctions will not be descriminatory. Let it be a universal rule that will apply across the board."

Touray pointed out that it is high time that the African Union asserted its authority in the continent.

He added, "I think if there is a ban on all military governments, and by virtue of that ban they don’t even have access to their sister African countries, and they are as well banned from attending AU programmes and sub-regional summits like ECOWAS, that will effectively impose a condition on them that will make them adopt a speedy transition to democratic rule."

Touray concluded that the ban should not only be limited to Africa, adding that they should further take it up with the United Nations to get further endorsement so that it becomes effective across the globe.
