Gambia News : Gambian illegal immigrant broke his neck to stay in Britain, officials say

Feb 15,2008 by

gambia London (United Kingdom) An illegal Gambian immigrant deliberately broke his own neck in a desperate bid to avoid deportation, UK ’Immigration Detention Centre’ officials claimed Tuesday.

The 34-year-old Gambian, Amadou Nyang is understood to have repeatedly hit his head against a wall while he was held in a cell at an immigration detention centre.

A team of doctors treating him at a London hospital said that he broke three bones in his neck and was on Monday night paralysed from the neck down and on a life-support machine.

One of his relatives revealed that Nyang was being held at the secure unit at the over-crowded Tinsley House Immigration Removal Centre, near Gatwick Airport, West Sussex of England, after being arrested when it was found his British visa has expired.

"Three main vertebrae in his neck snapped. As a result, he is paralysed and is a quadriplegic and very unlikely ever to walk again - if he survives", said one health attendant.

Nyang was discovered by an immigration officer who called for an ambulance and paramedics. He was taken from the 137-bed centre used to house men, women and families, to a ’Specialist Trauma’ unit at St George’s Hospital, in Tooting - South London. He was later transferred to East Surrey Hospital, in Redhill, Surrey.

Meanwhile, Border and Immigration Agency (BIA) officials at the British Home Office said they are continuing to decide on Nyang.

If Nyang survives, they will have to decide if he will be allowed to stay in Britain or sent back to his native Gambia.

A UK government spokesman said: "We would only ever remove someone from the UK if they were fit to fly, and to do so, complied with the relevant rights legislation".

An investigation into how Nyang was able to inflict such serious injuries on himself is ongoing.
