Gambia News : Gambian journalist alleges threat to life
A Gambian journalist and Banjul correspondent for the Associated Press Agency (AP), Abdoulie John, on Sunday alleged that some members of the country's security operatives had threatened to take his life.
This is the third time within a year that John, who also works for an online newspaper, Jollofnews, has faced one form of threat or the other.
Speaking from Banjul, the journalist told PANA: "Far from being disturbed, I am just alerting you, so that if I get into the deadly statistics you will know what to write," adding "I know what these people are capable of doing...."
The latest threat, he said, came from an unidentified caller using an (Africell line: +766 45 78) who also dropped a text message, warning - "today is the last day you will insult people."
John also disclosed that he had earlier received several threatening calls from the same line on 12 and 20 June.
He formerly worked for Gambia's pro-government Daily Observer newspaper before he was sacked and briefly detained on the orders of the country's embattled former Inspector General of Police, Ensa Badjie.
Meanwhile, scores of journalists and government critics have disappeared in the Gambia since 2003 leading to a climate of fear among media workers.
In 2006, a journalist, Chief Ebrima, went missing and rights group have been pointing accusing fingers at personnels of the Gambia's security.
