Gambia News : Gambian lawmakers repeal National Agricultural Development Agency Act
Gambian legislators Saturday repealed the National Agricultural Development Agency Act 2006. In an extra-ordinary meeting of the National Assembly in the 2008 legislative ye ar, the National Agricultural Development Agency Act, 2006, was repealed and the board of director of the agency consequently dissolved. According Ousman Jammeh, the Minister for Energy, the establishment of the National Agricultural Development Agency (NADA) has resulted in the drastic reduction of the number of persons going into farming, therefore adversely affecting the extension services delivery system.
He disclosed that the new structure would allow those adversely affected by the establishment of NADA in terms of job losses to be eventually re-engaged.
He added that the creation of NADA was at variance with the private sector-led growth and development policies and strategies.
He said the new development would considerably enhance the generation, mobilisation, effective and efficient utilisation of human, financial, and material resources for self-sustainability and gradual expansion and empowerment of farmers for improved delivery of extension services.
“It would further enhance food income security for improvement of the livelihood of farmers, as well as the establishment and development of linkages with the rest of the economy.
"This will enable the efficient and effective implementation of sector-wide polices, and enhancement of the national capacity to save and earn foreign exchange through increased agricultural productivity," the minister stated.
