Gambia News : Gambian minister calls for regional support to fight drug trafficking

Feb 24,2010 by

gambia Gambian Minister of the Interior, Ousman Sonko, has called for collective action to fight drug trafficking in the sub-region, saying that drugs had no borders and no single country could fight it alone.

Sonko said drug trafficking was the agenda of the ECOWAS ministers' meeting in Dakar recently to share country experiences on how to fight drug trafficking in the sub-region.

The minister made the remarks here on Tuesday during a meeting with his Guinea Bissau counterpart, Aja Satou Camara, and members of her delegation currently in the country on a four-day visit.

Noting that during his counterpart's visit they shared a lot in common, Sonko said they would work closely towards achieving these targets, adding that drug and

child trafficking were some of the things currently confronting the African region, which needs a collaborative effort to address.

Pointing out that The Gambia and Guinea Bissau had a good relationship, he noted that the visit of his counterpart was a clear demonstration of the brotherly ti e s between the two countries, adding that Guinea Bissau was one of Gambia's best partners when it comes to the re-export trade in the sub-region.

He commended the Guinea Bissau nationals residing in the country for being law-abiding.

Noting that President Yahya Jammeh was instrumental in making sure that peace and stability prevailed in Guinea Bissau, Sonko said to consolidate that peace and

stability now lies entirely in the hands of the Guinea Bissau politicians.

He assured that The Gambia would always continue to do its best to make sure the best prevailed in Bissau and the sub-region as a whole.

Responding, Camara said drug traffickers were mafias who needed to be controlled because they always think a step ahead of the security services.

She maintained that sophisticated equipment had to be put in place to fight traffickers, adding that this could only happen through information sharing.

She pointed out that there was a need to set up a joint commission involving The Gambia, Senegal and Guinea Bissau to address common security issues affecting them.

Camara said The Gambia was a true friend of Guinea Bissau, adding that The Gambia had always stood firm to make sure that there was peace in Bissau.

Shortly after their meeting, the Guinea Bissau delegation proceeded to visit the GAMBIS Project at the Immigration headquarters in Banjul were they were taken on a conducted tour.

  • Am very much in support of the Government in fighting against drug trafficking in order to keep our children away from this epedemic. Drugs distroy our society and encourage crimanality. May ALLAH guide us and protect our children from this enemy. BJ
