Gambia News : Gambian minister wants a halt to depleting forest resources

He called for an alternative measure to help the local population stop depending on the forest resources, saying 85 of it relies on the resources for energy needs, traditional building materials, medicines and fruits.

Minister Cham made the statements when he presided over the swearing in ceremony of American peace corps volunteers in Fajara, about 13km from Banjul.

"Bio- diversity is threatened by the loss of forest habitat. Although the whole country has suffered the effects of environmental degradation, the North Bank and parts of the Central River and Upper River Regions have suffered the most," he said.

The production of cash crops in the country has declined over the past decade, intermittently causing improverishment and food insecurity, he said.
