Gambia News : Gambian opposition party demands apology from President Jammeh
Opposition party, the Gambia Moral Congress (GMC), has demanded a
retraction of the death threat made by President Yahya Jammeh against
human rights activists, the party said in a statement received by PANA
here Saturday.
It also called on Jammeh to apologise for the threat.
Jammeh
recently warned Gambians to stay away from rights defenders whom he
labelled trouble makers and threatened to 'kill' anyone attempting to
'destabilise' the Gambia.
'We refuse to recognize the continuing
legitimacy of a head of state who publicly advocates the murder of
citizens for exercising their constitutional rights as official
government policy,â? the statement, signed by the party's leader, Mai
Fatty, added.
The opposition party also called on Gambians to
withdraw their support for Jammeh and his ruling party because 'his
party leadership endorses murder as official party policy.'
