Gambia News : Gambian parliament elects its third successive female speaker
The Gambian National Assembly on Wednesday unanimously elected
Elizabeth Renner, who was recently nominated as a member by President
Yahya Jammeh as its third successive female speaker, replacing
Fatoumata Jahumpa-Ceesay whose nomination was revoked about two weeks
ago.
The election was presided over by the
Chief Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim and supervised by the Chairman of
the Independent Electoral Commission, as required by the constitution.
Ms Renner becomes the third Gambian female
parliamentary speaker, after Ms Jahumpa Ceesay and her predecessor, the
late Belinda Bidwell.
In acceptance speech, Ms Renner commended the National
Assembly members for their unanimous decision to elect her, and she
implored them to foster unity among themselves. She said despite their
political differences, they share common objectives and it is only
through working together as a team will they achieve their desired
goals.
Ms Renner was first nominated a member of parliament in
1990 until 1994 when the military overthrew the civilian government of
former President Dawda Jawara. She became Principal at St Augustine’s
High School in Banjul, before later being appointed as principal of
Ndow’s Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Banjul from 1998-2003.
Until her nomination to the National Assembly last week, Ms Renner served as Deputy Ombudsman.
