Gambia News : Gambian police detain The Point Newspaper's editor Pap Saine & colleagues

Feb 03,2009 by

gambia Police in Gambia briefly detained a newspaper editor on Monday and charged him with publishing false information in connection with a story about the arrest of a diplomat, colleagues said.

Pap Saine, managing director and editor of The Point newspaper, went to police headquarters voluntarily after being summoned to answer questions and was held for several hours, said his colleagues who did not want to be identified.

He was later released on bail and ordered to return to police headquarters on Tuesday.

Saine is also the Reuters correspondent in the tiny West African country.

The story, published in last Friday's edition of The Point, related to a Gambian diplomat who had been detained on his return to the country from the United States, colleagues said.

Saine, a career journalist who has been a Reuters correspondent for over 30 years, was expected to appear in court on Tuesday on a charge of false publication, they said.

Government and police officials were not available for immediate comment, while the deputy head of the National Intelligence Agency said he knew nothing of Saine's detention.

Saine's colleague and previous editor at The Point, Deyda Hydara, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on the way home from work in December 2004.

Press freedom watchdogs say the case has never been properly investigated by Gambian authorities, who they accuse of using threats, arbitrary arrests and torture against journalists.
