Gambian president: Gambia gives priority to cooperation with Iran
Gambian President Yahya Jammeh said on Saturday that his country gives priority to expansion of cooperation and relations with Iran, which has been playing a key role in settlement of problems facing Muslim and oppressed nations.
"Special significance is given to expansion of relations with Iran due to the country's key regional and international role in settlement of problems facing the world of Islam and the oppressed nations," said Jammeh in an official round of talks with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran.
Jammeh arrived in Tehran early Saturday, heading a high-ranking politico-economic delegation, on a two-day official visit.
Thanking President Ahmadinejad for his participation in the African Union summit, Jammeh said it added to the importance of the meeting.
He called for stronger unity in the world of Islam considering the growing plots of enemies against Muslims.
He also urged broader ties between Iran and Gambia. "Expansion of relations between Iran and Gambia will not only be in the interest of the two nations, but will also benefit the whole Muslim Ummah." President Ahmadinejad, for his part, announced Tehran's readiness to share experience with Gambia, with which it has "friendly and extensive" cooperation.
Ahmadinejad said more doors are opened day by day for cooperation between the Iranian and Gambian nations.
He said the Iranian ministers of cooperatives and agriculture and the Gambian delegation are expected to discuss ways for broader cooperation and relations.
Congratulating Jammeh on his re-election to the presidential post, President Ahmadinejad wished him success in solving problems of the Gambian nation.
