Gambia News : Gambia’s information minister removed, barely a week after his appointment
Barely a week after his appointment to the post of minister of Communication and Information Technology, Mr. Omar Ndow, was on Wednesday redeployed to the Gambia Telecommunications Company as “Executive Chairman for Technical Matters,” making him one of the shortest lived cabinet appointments.
The surprising development was said to have been due to a decision which an official release from the office of the president says “came about after due consultation and mutual consent.”
Meantime, the ministerial portfolio “has been brought under the office of the president for the time being,” the release concluded.
Ndow, who was appointed minister last week, has faced several hiccups in his career as a telecommunications engineer. Having risen through the ranks, he eventually became the Director General of the Gambia’s telecommunications company, Gamtel.
In 2006, he appeared several times at an enquiry commission on the purchase of telecommunications equipment which put his administration in a bad light. He was subsequently held in detention and brought to trial.
He was acquitted by the courts but lost his job in the telecommunications services. He was unemployed up to the time of his brief appointment last week as Communication and Information technology minister.
