Gambia News : Government Terminates Partnership With Spectrum

gambia The Gambian government has cancelled a partnership agree ment with a Lebanese-owned company, Spectrum International Group over the management of national telecommunications giant, Gambia Telecommunications Company (GAMTEL), the President's Office said on Monday in a statement relayed by state broadcaster Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS).

According to the government, the decision was taken "due to fundamental breaches of provisions of partnership agreement made between the government and Spectrum International Holdings."

"This was further exacerbated by the underperformance of the company and the det erioration of the country's telecommunications infrastructure under its watch."

The government's decision followed President Yahya Jammeh's 72-hour-ultimatum to the company to explain its dealings or face the consequence.

The government had sold out 50 per cent shares to the Lebanese company in 2007, much to disapproval of many Gambians, including opposition politicians, who were opposed to the move.
