Gambia News : Guineans protest in Gambia

gambia Dozens of Guinean businessmen and women staged a public protest in Gambia's western city of Brikama Sunday against an alleged high handedness by an officer attached to the Gambia Police Intervention Unit (PIU), PANA reported. Eyewitnesses said the protest came after a Guinean boy was allegedly beaten into a state of unconsciousness by the unnamed officer, for causing an obstruction in the Brikama market.

The Guineans became angry when the police refused all appeals to take the boy to the hospital for treatment, and mobilised to storm the Birkama police station.

The police used tear gas to disperse the protesters, who peppered the station with stones and other objects.

It took a police reinforcement three hours to restore peace to the town, one of the largest in the country.
