Gambia News : IFJ wants charges against journalist dropped in Gambia

Aug 30,2008 by

gambia The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Friday urged Gambian authorities “to drop” seditious charges against the embattled Nigerian-born journalist, Abdoul Hamid Adiamoh, the global media freedom watchdog said in a statement received here by PANA.

Adiamoh, the Managing editor of Banjul-based “Today newspaper”, was dragged to court and charged with “sedition” by Gambian Police.

“Charging a journalist with sedition for investigating a genuine social problem is the act of a government that is contemptuous of journalists’ rights,” said Gabriel Baglo, the IFJ Director for Africa Office based here in the Senegalese capital.

“The government must drop the charges against Adiamoh and cease its harassment of independent journalists,” Baglo said.

Adiamoh's trouble with authorities stems from a story his newspaper published in July about children who miss school to look for scrap metals to sell.

Since July, he had been detained on three occasions before being dragged to court.

He was granted bail in the sum of 200,000 Dalasi (about 6,000 Euros) and his case is due to be heard 10 September.
