Gambia: Inferno at Albert market

Nov 28,2006 by

gambia by Alhagie Jobe  :  A fire outbreak on Sunday night completely ravaged an entire cassette canteen into ashes, being a property of one Amadou Jallow, at the Albert Market in Banjul.

The inferno which happened on the night of Sunday November 26, at about 8pm, caused incalculable damages, estimated at D125,000.

Speaking to the Daily Observer, shortly after the inferno, Amadou Jallow, the proprietor of the canteen disclosed that he does not know the exact cause of the fire, but suspects that it must have emanated from a wall electricity switch, which has forgotten to put off after work.

According to him, the wall switch earlier got burnt, as a result of fluctuating current which, he said had some negative impacts on electricity extension.

Subsequently, it exploded causing fire all over the shop.

“ I will not cast blame on anyone for the incident. Parhaps, it was destined by God. I have no other option but to take it in good faith. It is indeed unfortunate that some of the materials that perished in the fire are not mine. I have lost a considerable amount of money. But it is natural and I will continue to take it in good faith. Despite the fact that there were some security officers on duties at the market, they could not help the situation,” he said.

Amadou, who is vividly in a dillema went on to commend the Police Officers of Banjul City Council, who are currently responsible for security at the market and also The Gambia Fire and Ambulance Service for quickly responding to his call. ‘Without the help of these people, the fire would have been more serious and might have proceeded to other shops,” he concluded
